Benzingerode village church
The village church Benzingerode is the Protestant church of the village Benzingerode in the city of Wernigerode in Saxony-Anhalt . The church belongs to the parish association Heimburg in the provost of Bad Harzburg of the Evangelical Lutheran regional church in Braunschweig .
Architecture and history
The church was built between 1902 and 1903 according to plans by the Brunswick architect Johann Pfeifer , because the previous building had considerable structural damage. Construction began on March 11, 1902, and was inaugurated on November 8, 1903.
It was built in the neo-Romanesque style in the form of a central building on a cross-shaped floor plan. Regularly hewn stone blocks were used as building material. The building is not plastered. The appearance is dominated by the octagonal tower enthroned above the crossing , which is crowned by a high helmet . Smaller towers serving as a staircase are inserted in the spandrels between the western cross arm and the transept.
The interior was designed by the Braunschweig court and decorative painter Adolf Quensen . In addition to the wall surfaces, this also applies to the vaults in the crossing and in the chancel. The revelation of John is depicted in the chancel. Other pictures show a cycle of apostles, otherwise the painting is limited to merely decorative stencil painting . In the northern and southern arms of the cross there are galleries above the arched arcades. The organ made by the Furtwängler & Hammer workshop is on the western gallery. It dates from 1903 and has 14 registers , which are divided between two manuals and a pedal.
Also noteworthy are the colored glazing and an epitaph from around 1761 in the vestibule for Hans Schmitt's children.
