In Braunsdorf there was initially a wooden church that burned down at the end of the 14th century. It was followed by a massive church that fell into disrepair in 1732. The current church was rebuilt in 1734 with the support of the patroness Freifrau von Zehren.

In 1834 the pulpit altar with 14 late Gothic saints was built. It was built from the winged altar that used to stand on the square . In the chancel there are two epitaphs and other grave slabs of former patronage and manor lords .

The carved figure of Mourning John from the church, created in 1170, has been kept in the Predigerkirche in Eisenach since 1917 . The duplicate is in Braunsdorf .

In 1912 the Jehmlich brothers from Dresden installed the organ .

The ringing consists of four bronze bells, the big bell - owned by the parish since 1510 - was spared during the World War. In 1946 the bell that had been confiscated for melting was found again.
