The Protestant village church Briest is an early Gothic stone church in the district of Briest von Passow (Uckermark) in the district of Uckermark in Brandenburg . It belongs to the parish of Gramzow in the Evangelical Church District Uckermark of the Evangelical Church Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Upper Lusatia .

History and architecture

The flat-roofed rectangular field stone building with a retracted rectangular choir from the second half of the 13th century is highlighted by a high west tower the width of a ship with brick sections from the construction period (the floor beams were dendrochronologically dated to 1261 ± 10 d ). The church is one of the most important village churches in the Uckermark with features of a medieval town church. It was restored in 1931–1939 and 1980–1982.

The western front shows a triple stepped pointed arch portal with a stepped circular window above it. On the very high lower part of the tower, a square bell-shaped storey made of field stone with a twin opening made of brick was built between narrow lateral gable roofs. The gables of these gable roofs with triple openings above a frieze of rectangular fields framed by round bars are made entirely of brick, as is the gable roof. All the brick sections, which probably go back to the premonstratensic construction of the nearby Gramzow monastery , have been restored or completely renewed several times. A staggered group of three windows is arranged in the east wall; A modern vestibule has been built on the south side of the choir in front of the former priest's gate, the other portals have been blocked. Under the eaves cornice of the south wall of the choir there are plaster remnants with semi-circular double line incisions, which probably imitate an arched frieze, similar to the one in Kerkow, below which fragments of a painted tendril frieze can be seen in places.

The flat-roofed interior has a high chancel, preserved in its original form with three altar steps and original altarpiece, which is separated from the nave by a pointed triumphal arch . Another ogival opening leads from the ship to the tower, here with a brick staircase built in the building. Originally, the tower was vaulted with a pendentive dome in the bell storey made of brick, which has now been destroyed . Around 1880 the opening to the ship was walled up except for a door and at the same time a second domed vault was drawn in at the gallery level; in the process, the upper part of the wall staircase leading to the bell storey was probably broken off. The beam ceiling in the choir and nave was painted in 1939.

Furnishing

On a large plastered altar canteen from the construction period with painted brick masonry and ornamental frieze stands the late Gothic carved altar from around 1500, which was put together with an altarpiece, probably created for this purpose and dated to 1600, and restored in 1939. In the center shrine of the carved altar, Mary, surrounded by angels, is depicted between John the Baptist and Nicholas (?). In the wings there are reliefs from the childhood story of Jesus; on the wing backs four painted scenes of the Passion, to the state wings Christopher and Michael as a weigher of souls ; in the predella the twelve apostles between painted representations of saints Martin and George . A crucifixion group is shown in the two-storey tower, structured by columns, above St. George and the four evangelists painted on the side.

The wooden pulpit is dated 1598 and shows four evangelist reliefs on the polygonal basket in niches with diamond pilasters ; a small bas-relief made of clay (?) depicting the crucifixion from the rear wall of the pulpit is kept in the rectory. The font was made from clay casting in the second half of the 19th century. It is decorated with six female relief figures (prayers and personifications of faith and devotion) probably from a Berlin workshop. A brass chandelier with a double-headed eagle dates from 1697.

A horseshoe-shaped gallery and the organ were created in 1876. A chalice from 1734 and a paten from 1752 are made of gold-plated silver. Two pairs of candlesticks from 1650 and 1732 and a jug from 1739 are made of tin. Finally, there are two baptismal fonts from 1885 made of pewter and from 1861 made of silver.
