The Protestant village church Demerthin is a late Gothic hall church made of field stone masonry in the Demerthin district of Gumtow in the Prignitz district in Brandenburg . It belongs to the parish of Gumtow in the Prignitz parish of the Evangelical Church of Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Upper Lusatia and can be visited after registration.

History and architecture

The village church Demerthin was built in the second half of the 15th century as a late Gothic hall church in rustic stone masonry. The west transverse tower was built around 1500, the upper part made of brick in neo-Gothic forms was added in the years 1896/97. In 1541 the Reformation was introduced in Demerthin. The von Klitzing family held the church patronage from 1438 to 1945 . The last patroness was Adda von Klitzing (1876–1956), who belonged to the Confessing Church in the church fight from 1933 to 1945 and lived as a dominatrix in the Marienfließ monastery from 1945 until her death . The rectangular hall church is accessed by a arched west portal made of brick in a pointed arch panel, the other openings were changed in the baroque period. The opening between the ship and the tower inside was walled up later.

In the eastern part of the church, wall paintings from the 15th century were uncovered in 1968/69, which have since faded. The two-zone arranged paintings show the Passion and the Exaltation of Christ in the upper part, in the lower part there are representations from a heterogeneous program with the birth of Christ, a Radiant Madonna , the Hellmouth , the foolish virgins , the judge of the world and martyrs of saints. A sacrament niche is built into the east wall .

Furnishing

The main piece of equipment is a richly carved pulpit altar from around 1700, which was restored in 1994. The sound cover is formed from the cranked cornice and shows Christ as the victor, flanked by putti . The free figures of Moses and Christ from the 18th century were not originally included. A pastor's seat from 1566 and the architecturally structured parapet of the patronage stalls from 1604 complete the furnishings.

The organ is a work by Friedrich Hermann Lütkemüller from 1862 with seven stops on a manual and pedal . A rectangular epitaph for Ehrentraut von Klitzing from 1669 shows a painted copper tablet on a wooden base with an ancestral specimen , plus plastic putti heads and a skull with an hourglass.
