History and architecture

The church is one of the oldest churches in Mecklenburg. The brick building was started as a basilica in 1210 and continued as a single-nave building after a change of plan. By 1227 the church was built with a retracted choir with a round apse and a north sacristy. The mighty west tower was built up between 1250 and 1260. During renovations in the 14th century, the apse was raised, the choir and apse were vaulted , buttresses were added. The sacristy was enlarged in the second half of the 15th century, at the same time the south porch was added and the east aisle bays were removed. The soffit of the arched windows is sloping, the extended apse windows were probably divided into two parts in the 19th century. The arched portals are very richly designed. The wall of the south portal is tiered. The simple entrance on the north side is covered in a rectangular wall template with a clover leaf arch. The carefully executed building is clearly structured by pilaster strips , friezes and a base profile.

The tower hall is open to the flat-roofed nave with a high round arch. The added arcades can be seen on the eastern side of the nave . A domed cross - ribbed vault was drawn into the choir, and a four-part ribbed vault into the apse. The sacristy has a flat ceiling, the remainder of a central support and the beginnings of the former vault have been preserved. The patronage boxes on the south side of the choir were built in 1585 in the style of niche architecture; those on the north side were built in 1729 and extended in 1769 with a richly decorated upper floor with figures of angels and a coat of arms. Wall paintings from the 13th and 14th centuries have been preserved on the south wall of the choir .

Furnishing

  • The altarpiece was made in the 18th century. The three-storey architectural structure is decorated with various paintings. The crucifixion painting in the main field is flanked by pairs of columns and figures of saints. The medallions in the cheeks show Christ in Gethsemane and the interrogation before Caiaphas . The pictures on the upper floors show the burial and the resurrection. The top is crowned by a triumphant Christ.
  • The predella with a Last Supper painting is probably a work of the 17th century.
  • The wooden baptismal angel was carved around 1769.
  • The pulpit with staircase and sound cover was installed in the 18th century. It is decorated with rocailles on the curved basket .
  • The epitaph for Ludolf von Bassewitz was built from sandstone in 1626. It is decorated with an ancestral specimen and a crucifixion relief made of alabaster .
