History of the organ

The parish of Münchengosserstädt had to wait a long time for a new organ. Since such an instrument was very expensive at the time and a lot of renovation work in the past had consumed almost all financial resources, the community was faced with a problem. The organ that was still in use at the time was old and, if one can believe contemporary reports, it could hardly be used. Old and second-hand, it had been bought from Camburg Church in 1707. No wonder it stopped working after 150 years!

In 1820 the resident JC Traxdorf donated 100 thalers to set up a fund for a new organ. But it seems that enough money was not available until 1852, because according to the report of the pastor Carl Hölzer, the work began. In the end, preliminary work had to be done, such as reconstruction of the galleries to create space and ceiling height. For this purpose, the entire west gallery had to be changed and the “chair” of the manor owner relocated. The Peternell company from Seligenthal near Schmalkalden was commissioned to build the new organ. This completed the work in 1854. Pastor Hölzer reports on the costs: “The cost of the new organ was covered with 300 thalers. from the Traxdorf family, with 61 Thlr. donated by C. Mylius, the son of a former teacher and the parishes of Münchengoserstädt and Döbritschen. ”(The parish of Döbritschen was parish in the Munichgosserstadt church at the time). According to former parishioners, this organ worked excellently and had a very good sound. It was fully functional until around 1957/1959. After that it was hardly played on. A time followed in which there was hardly any church services, there were often changes of pastor, break-ins, destruction, including the windows. The decay of the winch, bird droppings and penetrating rainwater have certainly contributed to the current condition of this valuable instrument.

There is now an initiative to restore the organ. The project receives logistical and financial support from associations such as the Heimatverein and the fire brigade association as well as the political community. Individuals such as Prof. Dr. Herbert Schmidt from the "FRANZ LISZT" University of Music in Weimar.
