The village church Maria Magdalena is in the district of Griesheim in the town of Stadtilm in the Ilm district in Thuringia .

The village church is located on a hill to the west of the village. From here one overlooks the Ilm valley up to the eastern outskirts of Stadtilm .

history

The village church Maria Magdalena was first mentioned in 1119, the village Griesheim, however, on April 1, 1089. Since 1133 lords of Griesheim have been named who were also the founders of the church. They were independent feudal lords of the Counts of Schwarzburg and once built the castle on the Kirchberg.

This church is one of the most beautiful and oldest churches in Thuringia. From 1533 the Schwarzburger introduced the Reformation . This made Griesheim Protestant. Its present form received the church after several renovations and extensions in the 17th century. The originally towerless Romanesque church with archways was converted into a choir tower church. An extensive renovation took place in 1673 and the choir room was changed in the 18th century.

Art history

The history of art places the building in the second half of the 12th century. The portal sympana indicate a relationship to the Paulinzella monastery . Choir and nave form a single structure. Inside, a triumphal arch connects the nave and choir. Another pressed bow can be seen in the choir. A sacrament niche has been preserved on the north side of the polygon . In the 17th century the nave was redesigned in baroque style. A baroque altar shows a crucifixion group with Jesus , Mary and John from the 15th century. The pulpit rests on a Moses figure with ten commandments from 1625, two galleries and a wooden barrel from 1673. On the outside of the church, graves and memorial stones remind of victims of the wars.
