The Protestant village church of Meßdorf is a Romanesque hall church in the district of Meßdorf of Bismark (Altmark) in the Stendal district in Saxony-Anhalt . It belongs to the Gladigau parish in the Stendal parish of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany .

History and architecture

The church is a Romanesque field stone building from the end of the 12th century, which is located in the center of the raised, almost square churchyard, which is surrounded by an impressive, completely preserved field stone wall with three portals partly built in brick. The four-part Romanesque church type consists of a retracted square choir, the apse , the nave and a west transverse tower. This is completed with a bell storey from the 13th century with coupled pointed arch openings in a round arch panel and a gable roof. The northwest corner is supported by an oversized buttress, the southwest corner by a smaller buttress.

The current appearance is determined by the neo-Romanesque restoration in 1883. The patronage box in the north, the redesign of the window openings, the relocation of the main portal to the west and other brick additions also date from this period . After a fire in the apse and choir, the church was restored in 1981/1982. Another restoration took place in 2005.

Furnishing

The neo-Romanesque furnishings come from 1883, the painting is a historicizing new design from 1982. The hollow ceiling rests on a columned gallery, which takes up the blind arcade parapet of the brick altar table and the west gallery made of brick. The patronage box was bricked up to the choir in 1982. In the choir are three inscription tombstones for pastors from the 17th / 18th centuries. Century preserved.

The original four bells were cast between 1300 and 1835. The small sugar loaf-shaped bell is the oldest of the peals. One of the big bells weighs 1800 kg and was cast by Heinrich Engelke in Halberstadt.

The organ with a neo-Romanesque prospect is a work by Robert Voigt (Stendal) from 1869 with 21 stops on two manuals and a pedal . It was restored in 1998 by the Michael Becker Orgelbau company .
