The Schwiesau village church is the Protestant church in the village of Schwiesau in Saxony-Anhalt . It is protected as a cultural monument. The community belongs to the parish area of Klötze in the parish of Salzwedel of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany .

Architecture and history

The church was built around 1200 as a Romanesque fortified church . It had an apse , choir, nave and tower. By pillaging the church building was badly damaged and looting in the 15th century, after which carried out the reconstruction without apse. The late Romanesque nave and the rectangular choir now have a common roof.

In the 18th century the windows were enlarged significantly and the entrances relocated. A window in the east wall was exposed again in the second half of the 20th century. It received colored lead glazing that shows a motif of the flood . In 2001 the damaged window was repaired and given protection.

In the 1990s the church roof was re-covered and in 2004 the six large windows of the nave were renewed.

The tower is to the west of the nave. The slightly recessed upper floor of the tower dates from the late Gothic era and is made of field stones. It has sound openings designed as a round arch. Walled up round windows can be found in both the north and south gables . A small opening with a curtain arch can be seen above on the north side.

Furnishing

Inside the church is flat-roofed. There is a gallery on the western wall . Noteworthy is a small crucifix made of wood from the 15th century . The organ , designed in the neo-Romanesque style , was made by E. Erdmann from Neuhaldensleben in the second half of the 19th century.

Churchyard

The churchyard surrounding the church served as a local cemetery until the second half of the 19th century. Only the cross, which was restored in 2003 for the widow Cyrenius , who died in 1849, reminds of this today .
