The Protestant village church Treben is a Gothic, Baroque-style hall church in the municipality of Treben in the Thuringian district of Altenburger Land . It belongs to the parish of Treben in the Altenburger Land parish of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany .

History and architecture

The church with the patronage of St. Nikolaus and Katharina was originally the center of a large parish and was incorporated into the Augustinian canons of Altenburg in 1200 by King Philip of Swabia . The church is a two-bay hall church with a choir polygon, which was built between 1461 and 1473 by master mason Conrad and master carpenter Hans Behm. The window tracery has not been preserved. The west tower with a square ground floor has an octagonal superstructure from 1483 to 1503 and a curved dome with a lantern from the 18th century. Late Gothic additions include the patron's box in the north (1575) and the burial chapel of the von Bünau family in the south. After the fire, the building was refurbished between 1713 and 1720. The entire complex was restored in 1862. All medieval parts of the church are vaulted, including net vaults in the nave and star vaults in the choir, similar to those in Monstab's church . The beginners of the vault rest on figurative consoles. A two-storey gallery borders the room, on the parapet in front of the patronage box the coats of arms of the von Bünau are painted.

Furnishing

A baroque pulpit altar is structured with Corinthian columns and a blown gable with the risen Christ. The bulbous pulpit shows the images of the evangelists. In the choir there are four grave slabs of relatives from Bünau from the last quarter of the 16th to the beginning of the 17th century. In addition, a very finely worked epitaph made of colored marble and alabaster , probably from Freiberg, reminds of Heinrich von Bünau († 1600). It consists of a four-zone, richly structured frame architecture with columns and entablature, which surrounds scenic reliefs. In the first zone an inscription can be seen, in the second the main image with the family of the deceased in adoration of the Crucified in front of a depiction of Jerusalem in bas-relief, in the third and fourth zones there are reliefs with the Descent from the Cross, the Entombment, and the Resurrection arranged for the ascension of Jesus. The bronze grave plate for Heinrich von Bünau can be seen today in the chapel of Altenburg Castle .

The organ is a work by Urban Kreutzbach from 1862 with 23 stops on two manuals and a pedal . It was revised around 1920 and changed in planning by Reinhard Schmeisser in 1946 .
