Lothar Juckel (born August 20, 1929 in Königsberg / East Prussia ; † June 8, 2005 in Berlin ) was a German architect and editor of exhibition catalogs , architecture magazines and specialist books, mainly on the subject of urban planning / urban development .

Live and act

Lothar Juckel was born on August 20, 1929 in Königsberg. He attended school there from 1936 to 1944, but the family had to flee westward due to the war . He passed his Abitur in Halberstadt / Harz . Between 1945 and 1950 he completed an apprenticeship as a locksmith as well as a bricklayer . He then studied architecture at the Technical University of Berlin until 1957 , where he was primarily influenced by Willy Kreuer and Hans Scharoun . In 1952 he assisted Scharoun in the competition designs for the project " Reconstruction of the island of Helgoland ".

After receiving his diploma, Juckel continued to work as a scientific assistant with Scharoun at the Institute for Urban Development , right from the start with the conception of a star-shaped restaurant as part of Interbau 1957 , which, however, was just as unrealized as the Helgoland designs. Nevertheless, it was a productive and trend-setting time; it ended in 1961. Until then, Juckel had worked in parallel at the Akademie der Künste in the areas of publication and exhibition. The exhibition Hans Richter. A life for image and film that was also shown in other cities can be viewed. He also practiced as an architecture critic at RIAS Berlin .

In 1961 he became personal advisor to Werner Hebebrands , the chief building director of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg . Here Juckel became familiar with the complex tasks of urban planning. For example, he contributed to the structural models for the Hamburg development plan . With Hebebrand's retirement in 1964, Juckel's employment relationship ended and he went back to Berlin, where he took over the school building institute of the German states as its director. He also assisted Peter Koller at the TU Berlin. During this time, the second half of the 1960s, he wrote technical articles and was involved in various publications.

From 1970 he worked as a freelance architect in Berlin with a focus on building schools. From 1978 to 1986 he was publisher and editor-in-chief of Stadt magazine . Magazine for housing and urban development , which under his aegis advanced to become a high-quality specialist magazine.

In 1979, together with Hardt-Waltherr Hämer and Josef Paul Kleihues, he was asked to prepare the International Building Exhibition (later known as the " International Building Exhibition 1984/87 "). The planning company Bauausstellung Berlin GmbH was founded especially for this purpose and all three were appointed directors with equal rights. Their task was to tackle the exemplary rescue of the “broken city”, especially the run-down Kreuzberg . Due to disagreements, Juckel left in 1981.

In 1988 Juckels began to publish the “Edition StadtBauKunst” for specialist books on various aspects of urban planning. In addition, he founded and established the yearbook of the Chamber of Architects, published by Junius Verlag in Hamburg, entitled Architecture in Berlin (1992 to 2003), analogous to the architecture published there in Hamburg .

Juckel began his association work as chairman of the Berlin regional group of the German Academy for Urban Development and Regional Planning (DASL), and in 2001 he retired as managing director of DASL. One of his other engagements was taking care of the Schinkel competitions held in Berlin .

In the course of his working life he often took part in school building competitions, including in Berlin, Darmstadt, Dortmund, Gelsenkirchen, Hameln, Cologne, Nuremberg, Uelzen and Ulm.
