Wolfgang Schächen

Wolfgang Schächen (born July 23, 1948 in Berlin ) is a German architectural historian . The focus of his work is the building history of Berlin, especially during the National Socialist era . His monograph “Architecture and Urban Development between 1933 and 1945” is considered to be the standard work of architecture history on this subject. Schache was professor at the TFH Berlin (today Beuth Hochschule für Technik ) from 1988 to 2015 , and from 2001 to 2003 dean of Faculty IV (architecture and building and energy technology). Schache was a jury member at various competitions for the redesign of Berlin after 1989 and thus influenced the current shape of the city.

life and work

Wolfgang Schächen studied architecture at the TU Berlin . He completed his studies in 1972 as a graduate engineer. For the next three years he was a research fellow at the Technical University of Berlin, before working as a private assistant to the emeritus architectural historian Julius Posener from 1975–77 . In 1977 Schächen returned to the TU Berlin, where he worked as a research assistant with a teaching position at the Institute for Architecture and Urban History until 1985. At this institute he coordinated the interdisciplinary research project "Urban Development after 1945" for four years from 1983. In 1986 he received his doctorate in engineering. with the topic “Architecture and Urban Development in Berlin between 1933 and 1945” with Julius Posener and Hans Reuther .

In 1988 Wolfgang Schächen was appointed professor for building history and building survey at the TFH Berlin; since 2000 his chair has been entitled "Building History and Architectural Theory". In 2000 he was elected Vice Dean of the Department of Architecture / Utilities and Energy Technology at the TFH Berlin, and in 2001 he was elected Dean of the Department. Schache has presented more than 200 scientific publications in Germany and abroad, including more than 20 monographs. His research focus is the history of building and urban development in the 19th and 20th centuries, in particular the building history of Berlin under National Socialism with the transformation into the world capital Germania planned by Albert Speer .

Between 1979 and 1987 Schächen was a consultant for the International Building Exhibition (IBA) in Berlin. In 1987 he founded the office for architecture and urban research in Berlin-Charlottenburg , which draws up urban planning and monument preservation reports on behalf of the Senate , State Monuments Office , the federal government and private clients. In 1991 he was deputy specialist judge on the jury of the competition for the redesign of Leipziger and Potsdamer Platz in Berlin. In 2007 he was the jury chairman of the BBU competition for “creative usage concepts for existing monuments”.

Wolfgang Schächen lives and works in Berlin. He is an extraordinary member of the Association of German Architects (BDA).
