Dorin Giurgiuca

Dorin Giurgiuca (born December 8, 1944 in Mihalț ; † June 4, 2013 ) was a Romanian table tennis player . In the 1960s and 1970s he took part in four world championships and at least five European championships .

Career

Dorin Giurgiuca began playing table tennis at the age of eleven. He was discovered and promoted by Farkas Paneth . In 1959 the left-hander joined the CSM Cluj Napoca association.

Dorin Giurgiuca achieved her first international success as a teenager. In 1962 he was European Youth Champion in singles, doubles with Adalbert Rethi and mixed with Judith Crejec, he came second. He achieved numerous successes at the national championships of Romania. He was Romanian champion twice in singles (1968,1970), four times in doubles (1965–1967 with Gheorghe Cobirzan , 1968 with Radu Negulescu ), five times in mixed (1963 with Ella Zeller-Constantinescu , 1965–1967 with Maria Alexandru , 1969 with Carmen Crișan ) and several times in team competition with CSM Cluj Napoca. With CSM Cluj he also won four European Cups .

At the Balkan Championships between 1963 and 1971 he won a total of eight gold and five silver medals. In 1963 , 1965 , 1967 and 1973 he was nominated for participation in the world championships. He won bronze in a mixed with Maria Alexandru in 1967 .

Dorin Giurgiuca also reported successes at the European Championships, especially in the mixed competition with partner Maria Alexandru. Here the couple reached the semi-finals in 1966 and the final in 1968 .

In the ITTF world rankings , Dorin Giurgiuca was ranked 14th in 1965. In 1994 the Romanian Table Tennis Association awarded him the title Honored Master of Sports , at that time the highest honor for athletes.
