Doris Orgel (born Doris Adelberg, February 15, 1929 in Vienna ) is an American writer and translator .

Life

Doris Adelberg grew up in Vienna and after the annexation of Austria had to leave her school and attend a Jewish school before she fled to Yugoslavia with her parents Erna and Ernst and her sister in 1938 , where the family lived in Zagreb for seven months . They then fled to England in 1939 and finally to New York City in 1940 . After a longer stay in St. Louis , the family lived in New York again from 1941. There she attended Hunter High School . From 1946 to 1948 she studied at Radcliffe College and from 1948 to 1950 at Barnard College . Before debuting as a writer with Grandma's Holidays and Sarah's Room in 1963 , she worked in publishing for five years, translating and editing works by Hauff, Grimm, Brentano and Storm into English.

After her debut in 1963, Orgel wrote over 40 children's and picture books, occasionally together with Emily Coplon and Ellen Schecter . Five of her works have been published in German. Her children's book The devil in Vienna , published in 1978, was published two years later under the title A Blue and a Green Balloon and was filmed by Disney in 1988 under the title A Friendship in Vienna . In addition to several literary awards, she was awarded the Phoenix Award for young people in 1998.

She married the future analyst Shelley Orgel in 1949. She has three children with him.
