action

Parasite Eve II takes place several years after the events of the first part. The protagonist from the first game, Aya Brea, is also the playable character in this game. She is facing another mitochondrial outbreak . After the old incident, the policewoman Aya had herself transferred to Los Angeles , where she works as an agent for an anti-mitochondrial unit (MITF). The creatures have been appearing in this area more and more recently, but the attacks were still less and less until Aya was given the task of examining the Acropolis Tower after a monster sighting. After a previous false report (man in chicken costume), she sets out somewhat reluctantly.

But when she gets there and sees a crashed helicopter and dead people, she realizes the seriousness of the situation. She is talking to some other officers and drives up to the affected floor. There she meets a murdered SWAT team, but based on the nature of the injuries she does not assume a creature attack. She finds a surviving officer who gives her a key to the café, there is said to be a survivor. On the way, Aya has to defeat a first monster opponent. The survivor suddenly transforms into one, but Aya is rescued by Rupert, a direct colleague. They continue to investigate the building separately and meet number 9, an unknown terrorist in combat armor. Rupert is injured and Aya has to stop him from blowing up the building. After a fight, number 9 escapes and the explosions begin. At the last moment, Aya and Rupert are rescued by a police helicopter. Aya pursues the terrorist further into the Mojave desert and a bunker, where he wants to bring Eve, the main opponent from the predecessor, to new life in order to conquer the world.

Game mechanics

Parasite Eve II is more of a survival horror genre and contains fewer role-playing elements than its predecessor. In addition, the fights take place in real time and the combat area is limited. The approach is more typical of traditional survival horror games, although some RPG elements have been retained. This includes the receipt of experience points in order to gain access to higher levels of Parasite Energy (equated with magic). The other character traits include HP (Hit Points or Health) and MP (Mitochondria Points), which are used as energy for the Parasite Energy skills.

The character controls can be assigned to traditional survival horror: Aya is able to move forwards and backwards and can be swiveled left and right. The camera movement is limited, whereby a uniform view of a room or place is usually limited and cannot be changed by the player.

In contrast to the first part, there is no active time bar that regulates the sequence during a fight. The fights take place in real time, so that the player can freely decide what he thinks is right. Another difference is that the player cannot shoot off-screen targets or targets far away. There are also no more random fights; Enemies can be seen while running; so the player can avoid confrontations and plan strategies. Aiming, as with most games in this genre, is linked to switching through the various targets within Aya's reach.

The equipment can be obtained by several methods. You can get items such as armor, weapons, ammunition and tools by searching, shopping or creating. Unlike most other survival horror games, ammunition is never in short supply. While Aya can only carry small amounts of equipment with her, there are inexhaustible boxes of ammo in most areas and you can reload whatever is required for a top-up as often as you want. This encourages the player to fight instead of running, since with this game principle it is the only way to gain experience points in order to become stronger and to be successful. The equipment follows the original game concept and remains customizable; in general, modified weapons or armor are limited in the game world. Armor not only minimizes the risk of injury, it also has an impact on how much Aya can carry. So you can add more article slots up to an upper limit of 10.

The Parasite Energy are divided into four areas: the offensive elements are fire and wind, the defensive elements are water and earth.

Once the game is completed, bonus items will become available that can be used in Replay Mode. Other game modes will also become available, such as Bounty Hunter or Scavenger mode, which are more difficult to finish in their gameplay. The most difficult game mode is the Nightmare mode, which is only available if you exit the game in Scavenger mode.

publication

The game was released on December 16, 1999 in Japan and on September 12, 2000 in North America for the PlayStation. In addition, unlike its predecessor, it was also released in Europe on August 25, 2000.

On November 24, 2010 it was first made available for download on the Japanese PlayStation Network , on May 31, 2011 in the European and on August 23, 2011 in the North American.
