Doric hexapolis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Doric Hexapolis was in antiquity a union of six Doric cities consisting of Kos on the island of the same name ( Kos ); Knidos and Halicarnassus in Caria as well as Lindos , Ialysos and Kameiros in Rhodes . The merger probably took place in the 7th century BC. Under the influence of the Ionian League and in conscious competition with it.

According to Herodotus , Halicarnassus was excluded because a citizen of the city named Agasikles, as the victor of the Triopia, did not immediately donate the bronze tripod that was exposed as a prize to the temple, as usual, but took it home and hung it on the wall. The Triopia were the agon held in honor of Apollo in the federal shrine of the Hexapolis in Triopion near Knidos . The actual reason for the exclusion of Halicarnassus may have been that the Carian and especially Ionic influence in this city was too great and would have been irreconcilable in the long run with a Doric association aimed at the exclusivity of tribal affiliation. The union of the remaining five cities is known as the Doric Pentapolis .
