Dorn Therapy

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Dorn Therapy , also known as the "Dorn Method", is one developed by the farmer and sawmill operator Dieter Dorn (born August 13, 1938 - January 19, 2011 ) from Lautrach near Memmingen around 1975 and conveyed it in books and courses Complementary medical manual method that is somewhat reminiscent of chiropractic , but is fundamentally different from this in its execution and also includes elements of the meridian theory of traditional Chinese medicine . The process is not scientifically recognized as there is no evidence of effectiveness.

Overview

According to Dorn, modern life leads to a lack of exercise, incorrect strain and ultimately to misalignments of the spine and pelvis . This is the cause of most back problems, but also numerous other complaints. In particular, almost everyone has a " pelvic inclination ", the cause of which is "due to a misalignment in one or more leg joints" and which manifests itself in an (apparently) longer leg on the affected side.

The Dorn therapy is intended to correct functional leg length differences that require treatment and to bring vertebrae that are not in their normal position back into the correct position by applying slight pressure from the therapist and simultaneous movements of the patient. Since a pair of nerves emerges from each vertebra that supply organ and tissue areas in the same body segment, positive effects on these areas would be achieved at the same time. For example, in the area of the third thoracic vertebra, the “gate of the wind” (called “Fengmen” by the Chinese), the supply of the respiratory organs. Thus, a vertebral correction in this area could normalize a disturbed respiratory function, such as B. asthma or bronchitis, cause or could be problems in the respiratory area due to a misalignment of the third thoracic vertebra.

distribution

The method is mainly used in Germany . It is mainly used for back and joint problems. The Dorn method is sometimes combined with Rudolf Breuss massages to relax the muscles in order to facilitate the actual Dorn treatment. The costs of a Dorn therapy are not covered by the statutory health insurances, as there is no reliable proof of effectiveness, whereas the private health insurances usually do.

The Dorn method was very influential, especially its "gentle" way of treating the spine has found many imitators. It has also undergone numerous further developments, such as: B. by Helga and Eberhard Popp (dynamic spine therapy) and by Burkhard Hock ( Hock method , formerly Dorn-Hock method ).

criticism

The Dorn therapy is not recognized by science because there is no scientific proof of its effectiveness in the form of clinical studies and the postulated pathomechanisms have not been proven. In particular, the theory of pelvic inclination advocated by Dorn users, which is said to be due to a femoral head not correctly seated in the joint socket , is cited by experts from the perspective of scientific medicine as evidence of a lack of basic medical knowledge and a completely unsuitable thought model of the Dorn method . In addition, at least some interventions by the practitioner are not safe for all patients and, in addition, serious medical emergencies have occurred after self-application of the method, as it is propagated as harmless in seminars (ibid).

Lately, however, a rethinking of the method has also been noticed. Detected leg length differences are no longer necessarily attributed to a dislocation of the hip joint (which is medically extremely rare), but to subluxations of the hip, knee and ankle joints or disorders in the “complex interplay of bony and muscular structures”.

Quotes

Sometimes it would be a good idea to clean the second thoracic vertebra before putting in a pacemaker. (Dieter Dorn)

If I had had anatomical knowledge, I would have seen everything so complicated that I would not have dared to do many things. (Dieter Dorn, quoted from)
