Dorothee Alfermann

Dorothee Alfermann (also Dorothee Bierhoff-Alfermann ) (* 1949 in Bonn ) is a German sports scientist , sports psychologist and university professor.

Life

Alfermann studied psychology, philosophy and sociology at the University of Bonn between 1967 and 1971 , and in 1974 also completed her doctorate in psychology in Bonn. From November 1973 to July 1979 she worked as a research assistant and academic advisor at the Aachen University of Education. In July 1979 she took up a professorship for sports science and sports psychology at the University of Giessen, and in September 1994 she moved to the University of Leipzig , where she became professor for sports psychology. In March 1993 and March 1996 Alfermann was visiting professor at the Institute for Psychology at the University of Innsbruck and from August to December 1998 at West Virginia University in the United States.

Between 1987 and 1990, Alfermann was a member of the science commission of the German Sports Association (DSB) and was a member of the scientific advisory board of the DSB board from 1996 to 1999. From 2001 to 2005 she was Vice President of the World Organization for Sport Psychology, ISSP. Between 2009 and 2013 she held the office of chairperson of the German Association for Sports Science and was the first chairperson of the Working Group for Sport Psychology in the Federal Republic of Germany (ASP) from 1993 to 1997 , after having been a member of the board between 1983 and 1989, and in 2016 she became the first woman to receive the ASP's Golden Badge of Honor. From 2001 to 2005 she was director of the Center for Women and Gender Studies (FraGes) at Leipzig University. From 2004 to 2011 Alfermann was co-editor-in-chief of the magazine "Psychology of Sport and Exercise". In 2015 she was awarded the Ema Geron Prize of the European Association for Sport Psychology.

“During the last 30 years she belonged to the small group of sports psychologists who had a significant influence on the development of national and international sports psychology and sports science. It also ensured that sport psychology was recognized in psychology, ”said Bernd Strauss in recognition of Alfermann's achievements in 2016. Alfermann retired after the 2016 summer semester.

Her research interests include social and psychological factors influencing athletic careers, the social skills of coaches in the youth field, the influence of parents on the development of athletes, gender roles and gender differences, the topic of sports and mental health, the transition from competitive sports to post-sports careers, cultural differences Relationship between athletes from Germany and Asian countries, family education and sport as well as socio-psychological questions of sport.
