Dorotheos of Tire (Menologion of Basil II )

According to legend , Dorotheus of Tire (* around 255 in Tire ; † 362 in Odyssopolis , Thrace ) was an early Christian priest and bishop of Tire who died a martyr at an advanced age . He is venerated as a saint in the Catholic and Orthodox Churches . His feast day is June 5th. His martyrdom is mentioned in Theophanes in 362 . The list of 70 disciples associated with the name Dorotheos has nothing to do with him.

Life according to the legend

During the persecution of Christians by the Roman emperor Diocletian , Dorotheus had to go into exile as a priest, but he was able to return later. As Bishop of Tire he took part in the Council of Nicea in 325 . However, by Emperor Julian he was again exiled to Thrace, where he was martyred . The 107-year-old clergyman was imprisoned, beaten, and eventually murdered for his belief.
