Dorothy Howard

Dorothy Alice Howard (born February 4, 1929 in Winnipeg ; † March 1, 2013 ibid) was a Canadian singer with a mezzo-soprano voice and music teacher .

Live and act

Howard sang from 1958 to 1968 as a chorister and soloist with The Choristers , a chamber choir founded by WH Anderson , and she was also a soloist at Westminster United Church in her hometown. From 1960 to 1969 she taught English, French, and music in high school, and performed in operas and concerts. From 1969 to 1990 she taught at the University of Saskatchewan . Her students included Kristine Anderson , Karen Jensen , Michelle Milenkovic , Barbara Milner , Janice Paterson and Kevin Power .

She was a founding member of the Saskatoon Opera Association and sang leading roles in Carmen , Iolanthe , Amahl and the Night Visitors and Hansel and Gretel, among others . Her repertoire as a concert singer included works by contemporary composers such as Harry Adaskin , Violet Archer , Michael Colgrass , Jean Coulthard , Robert Fleming , Harry Freedman , R. Murray Schafer and Harry Somers . She was active as a juror, consultant and examiner, participated in conferences and workshops and was the regional representative of the Metropolitan Opera Council from 1980 to 1986 . Her composition Celebrate Saskatchewan appeared in the Celebrate Saskatchewan Songbook in 1980 .
