Doug Poindexter and the Starlite Wranglers were an American country band . Poindexter and the Starlite Wranglers recorded a single on Sun Records .

Career

Band leader Doug Winston Poindexter was born in Vanndale , Arkansas , in 1928 . He was deeply rooted in traditional country music and, modeled on his idol Hank Williams, founded the Starlite Wranglers, which included Bill Black on bass and Scotty Moore on guitar . Both musicians would later make the first recordings with the young Elvis Presley .

Poindexter and his band played in the Memphis , Tennessee area , including at the Bel Aire Club. The young Presley attended several of the band's concerts. Scotty Moore arranged a session in Sam Phillips ' studio for Poindexter and his band in May 1954, a month before Presley made his first recordings . There were Now She Cares No More , a traditional country number, and My Kind of Carryin 'On , a faster Country Boogie recorded. Both titles were released on Sun that same month. Billboard wrote in the May issue, “ Good Country ditty gets an OK chanting from the nasal voiced Poindexter. Big city country buyers might not go big for this, but it should do well in the back country. “, But with 330 copies sold, sales were rather disappointing. As a result, Phillips canceled the collaboration with Poindexter and his Starlire Wranglers.

Although Poindexter's own career was a failure, he played a more prominent role in the career of the young Elvis Presley. It is likely that Poindexter starred on some of Presley's early recordings with Sun and, for example, helped arrange Good Rockin 'Tonight . Before Presley played in Memphis with Malcolm Yelvington and his star Rhythm Boys, he played many concerts with Poindexter in Memphis.

Even so, Poindexter left the music scene soon after and worked in the insurance business instead. He died on October 1, 2004 in Memphis Baptist Hospital at the age of 76.
