Douglas Annesley David "Doug" Stupart (born March 30, 1882 in the Cape Colony , today South Africa , † May 6, 1951 ) was a South African athlete.

Career

Stupart moved to the vicinity of Johannesburg around 1890 , where he attended the Marist Brothers' School . Even as a child he was considered a good athlete, but from 1897 to 1902 he did not contest any competitions. From 1903 he began to dedicate himself to the hurdles, which caused him to lose some speed on the flat routes. As early as 1904 he was able to win the South African Championship over the hurdles distance (120 yards ) and in the following two years he managed to repeat his success. At the national championships in 1907 in Durban , he did not take part because he married the day before the competition, in 1908 he won again.

He represented his country at the 1908 Summer Olympics in London , where he was the flag bearer of South Africa at the opening ceremony. He started in the triple jump and in the 110 meter hurdles . In the triple jump he finished tenth with a personal best of 13.40 meters; 72 centimeters were missing from the bronze medal, the Olympic champion Tim Ahearne from the United Kingdom even jumped a good one and a half meters further than him. Over the hurdles he was third behind the Britons Alfred Healey and Henry Murray from Australasia in his preliminary run , which was not enough for a place in the semifinals.

In addition to his athletics career, Stupart also played rugby . He worked for the railroad in the Transvaal province .
