Douglas is a town in Siyancuma parish , Pixley Ka Seme District , Northern Cape Province in South Africa . It is located on the Vaal , which flows into the Orange River about 10 kilometers west of the city . The city is named after Sir Percy Douglas . In 2011 it had 20,083 inhabitants.
history
Reverend Isaac Hughes founded a mission station on the Backhouse farm in 1848 . The Griqua were in control of the area . Its leader Nicholas Waterboer gave a group of European settlers permission to set up the settlement on the ford in 1867. The settlement received city status in 1905.
On Driekops Island in the Riet River, which flows into the Vaal to the northeast of the town, there are hundreds of rock carvings that were believed to have been made by San . When the water level is high, these paintings are covered by the water.
