Douglas Day Stewart (born January 1940 ) is an American screenwriter , film producer and film director .

Life

Douglas Day Stewart joined the United States Navy in 1962 and became Officer Of the Deck after three years of service, including serving in the Vietnam War . After graduating from the University of Southern California , Stewart first wrote an episode screenplay for the television series in 1971. Stewart also adapted the novel The Blue Lagoon to the romance film The Blue Lagoon , before processing his own time in the Navy into the film An Officer and a Gentleman . The love drama starring Richard Gere and Debra Winger was his biggest success to date. He was awarded an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay in 1983 .
