history

Dpunkt.verlag was founded in January 1995 by Gerhard Rossbach and Michael Barabas in Heidelberg as a specialist publisher for digital technology . The main shareholder until 1999 was the Hüthig publishing house. The first products came onto the market at the 1995 Book Fair. The central topic in the initial phase was the Internet and related technologies and programming languages.

Target groups were people who deal with IT in training, studies or work or who use digital technologies creatively (e.g. DTP ). In addition, the organization of specialist congresses and workshops was the focus from the start.

After an economically difficult initial phase, Hüthig was separated in 1999 by means of a management buyout . Gerhard Rossbach and Michael Barabas ran the publishing house independently until 2001. The Heise Group has been involved since 2001 , and since January 2, 2002 with 94% as the main shareholder. The collaboration with the Heise publishing house was intensified in the following years, including through joint book series and events.

While computing topics were still in the foreground in the early years, publications on digital photography were added around 2004. The online magazine fotoespresso was also created at this time . Books on so-called maker topics have also been published since 2010 . In 2011, the SmartBooks brand was taken over as an imprint of the publishing house Titel for Apple users and iOS / OS X programmers. Since 2015, the book program has been expanded to include titles for learning to draw.

Around 120 new publications are currently published each year, around a third of them for photography. For example, Hanspeter Mössenböck , Klaus Schmeh and Harald Mante are represented as authors . Almost all new titles are now also available as e-books . Together with Heise Developer , 15 annual specialist congresses are currently offered: building IoT, Continuous Lifecycle, ContainerConf, data2day, devSec, enterJS, Herbstcampus, enterPy, MacDev, betterCode, Minds Mastering Machines , storage2day, IIoT Conference, Machine Learning Essentials and DevOps Essentials .

At the end of 2014, the publisher announced that Microsoft Press would publish translations exclusively for the German book market. In July 2015 dpunkt.verlag took over the German-language program from O'Reilly . The German-language O'Reilly program has been continued with translations and original publications since 2015. In 2018 the label Polarise - publishing house for trends was started, among other things with life help and diet books as well as a tech thriller.
