Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde from 1920 is a film adaptation of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by the British author Robert Louis Stevenson , however, is not associated with the lesser-known film Dr. Confuse Jekyll and Mr. Hyde .
action
Lawyer John Utterson wonders about his friend, doctor Dr. Henry Jekyll, who, in the event of his death, bequeathed all of his possessions to a mysterious stranger named Edward Hyde. Hyde is a short, vicious figure and even goes so far as to run over a little girl and slay the respectable Sir Danvers Carew. When Dr. Lanyon, who is friends with Utterson and Jekyll, dies, Utterson enters Jekyll's laboratory with the help of Jekyll's butler, where he finds his body. Jekyll had committed suicide after working on a substance designed to bring out evil in humans. Dr. Jekyll turned into the bad Mr. Hyde, with whom he could live out his bad self, but lost control of his alter ego over time.
background
- This film is overall the fifth, but the first full-length screen adaptation of Stevenson's literary source. John Barrymore, who was previously known as a stage actor and played Shakespeare's "Richard III" at the same time as the filming on Broadway, delivered here in the double leading role as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde did a brilliant job.
- In the same year MGM produced a film version of the material with the same title , which u. a. was moved to the present. However, the quality did not come close to Paramount's version.
- In 1965 a colorized version of the film was created, for which Killiam Films, Inc. acquired the copyright in 1971 .
