Martha Mansfield (* 14. July 1899 in Mansfield , Ohio , † the thirtieth November 1923 in San Antonio , Texas ) was an American musical - and silent film - Actress .

Life

Martha Ehrlich was born in Mansfield in 1899. In 1912 she moved with her mother to New York City in the Bronx , where she worked as a model for the fashion photographer Alfred Cheney Johnson and the artist Harrison Fisher . She later appeared as a dancer and in first film productions. In 1917 she played at the side of Max Linder under the stage name Martha Early in three films of his wife. She later adopted the stage name Martha Mansfield, based on her hometown . In 1918 she was seen at the Ziegfeld Follies .

After several small roles, she became famous for her portrayal of Millicent Carewe in John S. Robertson's literary adaptation, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde known to a wider audience at the side of John Barrymore .

In 1923 Mansfield received a serious role in the drama The Warrens of Virginia , which should bring her the breakthrough. During a break in filming, her frilly dress probably caught fire from a discarded match. Mansfield was badly burned and died the following day in San Antonio Hospital . She was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery , New York City.
