Dragoslav Srejović

Dragoslav Srejović (born October 8, 1931 in Kragujevac ; † November 29, 1996 ) was a Serbian-Yugoslav archaeologist.

He studied at the University of Belgrade , where he received his doctorate in 1954 with a dissertation on Neolithic and Eeolithic anthropomorphic statuettes in Yugoslavia (Belgrade 1964). In 1958 he became assistant, 1966 lecturer and 1970 professor for the prehistory of the Balkans , which he remained until his death. Srejović was engaged in various branches of archeology and carried out many excavations in Serbia and Montenegro or led them as director. The excavations of Mesolithic and Neolithic sites in Lepenski Vir and the excavations in the Roman settlements of Gamzigard and Šarkamen were particularly important . He also dug in the early Neolithic Vlasac , for example . The publications of the excavations made him known at home and abroad.

His position in the cultural and scientific life of Serbia was expressed in his role as Vice President of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts . In addition, Srejović was a member of the Yugoslav Academy of Sciences and a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute . He died after a serious illness.
