The Drake Nunatak is a 1935 m high nunatak in Marie Byrd Land in West Antarctica . It rises 1.5 km east of the Elliott Nunatak at the foot of the Bermel Escarpment in the Thiel Mountains .
Peter Bermel and Arthur Ford, who jointly led an expedition of the United States Geological Survey from 1960 to 1961 into the Thiel Mountains, made the name. It is named after the American geologist Avery Ala Drake Jr. (* 1927), who worked for the United States Geological Survey on board the icebreaker USS Glacier in the area of Thurston Island and the Bellingshausen Sea from 1960 and 1961 .
