Antônio Drauzio Varella (born January 1, 1943 in São Paulo ) is a Brazilian doctor and author.

After studying medicine at the university in his hometown, Varella first specialized in infectious diseases and later in immunology and oncology . From 1986 he appeared in radio programs for young people with contributions on health issues, e.g. B. about AIDS, on and later on TV. From 1989 to 2001 he volunteered at Carandiru Prison in AIDS prevention . His book Estação Carandiru (German: Station Carandiru ) describes his experiences and the appalling prison conditions . It was awarded the Prêmio Jabuti in 2000 and was filmed in 2002 by Héctor Babenco with Luiz Carlos Vasconcelos in the role of Varellas. In 2009 there was a report on Varella's participation in a research project of the Universidade Paulista, which aims to track down herbal active ingredients for cancer therapy in the rich flora of the Brazilian rainforest.

Varella is often associated with the following bon mot , which actually does not come from him:

“In today's world, five times more is invested in drugs for male potency and silicone for women than in curing Alzheimer's patients. As a result, in a couple of years we will have old women with big tits and old men with hard penises, but none of them can remember what that is good for. "

On February 25, 2009, Varella made it clear in the newspaper Folha de S. Paulo that he had nothing to do with this statement .
