The church was built in the years 1665–1670 under the rule of Michael Oswald von Thun-Hohenstein (1631–1694) according to plans by Carlo Lurago by Rossi de Luca . It was consecrated on September 21, 1670 by Bishop Wenzel von Thun and Hohenstein (1629–1673). It connects to the castle grounds just a few steps from the market square with the town hall and historic town houses and forms an ensemble with the Sala terrena . The Thun and Hohenstein family , new owners in the village as a result of the Thirty Years War , developed a brisk construction activity and put their family crypt near the church, which can be visited. The church is a single-nave early baroque building and has a barrel vault richly decorated with lunettes and has survived several city fires, so most of the furnishings date from the time it was built.

Church renovations took place in 1884, 1935 and 2003 with renewed consecration by the Leitmeritz Bishop Josef Koukl (1926-2010). The Thun-Hohenstein family crypt is housed in the Thunschen grave chapel, since 1861 it has been separated from the church and accessible separately.

On the main portal of the church is the alliance coat of arms of Michael Oswald von Thun-Hohenstein and his wife Elisabeth, b. Countess of Lodron († 1688) attached.

Sculptures on the church

Various sculptures were placed around the church building:

  • Marian column from Preßnitz ( Přísečnice ) below the church (1699)
  • Sculptural group of the Marian column from Brunnersdorf ( Prunéřov ) with four statues of saints to the right of the church
  • Statue of St. Anthony of Padua to the left of the church
