history

With its monumental size and its architectural importance, it enriches the silhouette of the old town of Negotin. It is considered a symbol of the city. The East Serbian city became the cultural and spiritual center of Timočka Krajina in 1842, and the church was built for this reason.

The construction plan of the church was drawn up by the Ministry of Construction of Serbia. In 1868 the Archbishop Evgenije commissioned the construction company Štajnehlera from Negotin to start building the church. The start of construction was postponed because District Administrator Ranko Alimpić wanted to relocate the city directly to the banks of the Danube. However, this was not implemented because trading on the Danube was possible from this distance . Construction of the church began on May 8, 1872. After two years of construction, the church was completed in 1874. The Holy Trinity Church was consecrated two years later in 1876.

In the northeastern part of the churchyard is a powder magazine and in the southeastern part the church building, which is parallel to Ulica Hajduka Veljka . The building was built in the late 19th century and is embellished with its characteristic facade with cornices and other decorative elements. The church in Negotin and its preserved art objects have great historical, architectural and artistic value for Serbia.

The church is built in neo-classical (national) style with elements of neo- renaissance style and classicism , making it unique in Serbia. The frescoes of the church were painted in 1901 by the painter Stevan Todorović and his wife Poleksija Todorović, the painter Milisav Marković and the artist Pavle Ćortanović. Mr. and Mrs. Todorović also painted the icons for the iconostasis of the church.

The church has an iconostasis with valuable icons . The room acoustics of the church offer favorable conditions for holding concerts of sacred orthodox music. An iron fence was built in the churchyard in 1893. The pillars and plinths are made of sandstone from near Negotin. Balls were erected on top of the pillars as decorative elements. These come from the Fetislam fortress near Kladovo .

The church is a single-nave church building with a distinctive entrance portal and a polygonal apse and a square church choir.

On the western side of the churchyard, a massive vertical church tower rises, which not only dominates the church, but also dominates the city center and the wider area of Negotin. The church and steeple are both striking and richly decorated with decorative elements.
