Drepanocladus polycarpus wing cells at the base of the leaf (magnification: 125 ×)

Drepanocladus polycarpus is a species of the moss and closely related to Drepanocladus aduncus . It differs from this essentially by the broader downward leaf wing cell group at the leaf base, which reaches the leaf central rib. The leaves of the stems are almost straight, flat or slightly concave. The moss grows below the surface of the water (submerged) in more or less calcareous lakes, rivers and in damp moors. It is particularly common in the lowlands. There is a risk of confusion especially with water forms of Amblystegium riparium (or Leptodictyum riparium ), which however do not have such elongated leaf auricles .
