Driouch (actually Dar Driouch; Arabic الدريوش, Zentralatlas-Tamazight ⴷⴷⵔⵉⵡⵛ Eddriwec ) is a town with about 60,000 inhabitants southwest of Nador in the province of the same name in the Oriental region in north-east Morocco .
location
Driouch is located in the eastern foothills of the Rif Mountains about 100 km (driving distance) southeast of Al Hoceima and about 60 km southwest of Nador . After prolonged or heavy rains, the Oued Kert flows through the village and flows west of Melilla into the Mediterranean .
Population and economy
The city's residents are mainly Rif Berbers who immigrated in the second half of the 20th century . Many men work in Europe and return to their hometown every summer. Other jobs exist in retail, craft and administration, as well as in schools and healthcare.
history
In the Rif War (1921-1926) Driouch sided with the Rifkabylen under Abd al-Karim and thus against the Spanish occupation forces. In 1975, after Morocco annexed the Western Sahara regions , the city took in hundreds of Moroccans who had fled Algeria . Since 2009 Driouch has been the capital of the newly created province of the same name.
Attractions
Driouch has no historically significant landmarks; only the Spanish Church refers to the situation in the first half of the 20th century.
