Drosanthemum is a genus of plants fromthe afternoon flower family (Aizoaceae). It is a floral element of the Capensis .
description
Drosanthemum species grow as perennial succulent plants. The succulent leaves are sessile and opposite. There are no stipules.
The flowers are single or several in zymose inflorescences. The hermaphroditic, radial symmetry flowers have a diameter of 0.8 to 6 centimeters. There are many bracts that have many different bright colors (depending on the species and variety). There are many (about 75) stamens present. Most five (rarely four or six) carpels have become an under constant ovary grown.
Five-chamber capsule fruits are formed that contain many light brown seeds.
distribution
The genus Drosanthemum is native to the south and west of South Africa , some species can be found in neighboring Namibia .
Systematics
The genus Drosanthemum was first described in 1927 with the type species Drosanthemum hispidum (L.) Schwant. by Gustav Schwantes in the Zeitschrift für Sukkulentenkunde , Berlin 3, p. 29. The botanical name is derived from the Greek words drosos for "dew" and from anthos for "flower" and describes the water cells on the leaves of many species of this genus, the dewdrops resemble. On the basis of morphological features, Heidrun Hartmann differentiated between nine sub-genera , which can be largely supported by molecular- phylogenetic support. The number of species fluctuates, as originally described species (list below) are synonymous due to new knowledge and genetic data and others are newly described.
