  • The expression Dry County (in German svw. "Dry district") means in the United States that in the respective county (comparable for example to the German district , the Austrian or the Swiss district ) the sale, serving or transport of alcohol is severely restricted or is prohibited. Free cities within these counties are not affected by this regulation, but can adopt them or create their own regulations. In this case one speaks of Dry City or Dry Town . Most of the dry counties are in the southern and midwestern United States.

Since prohibition was repealed in the 21st Amendment to the United States Constitution , regulation of alcohol has become a state rather than a federal matter.

    differences

The restrictions on the alcohol ban are not uniformly regulated. In Alabama, 26 out of 67 counties are dry counties . However, 16 cities within these counties allow alcohol to be sold within the city limits. Private individuals are allowed to transport up to one case of beer and three bottles of alcohol.

In Texas , out of 254 counties, 44 are dry counties and 169 are “semi dry” counties (ie “partially dry”). In some of these 169 counties the sale of beer up to 4% alcohol is allowed, in others drinks with up to 14% alcohol (i.e. no spirits ) can be sold. In most counties, however, alcohol is allowed, at least in private clubs.

There are 120 counties in Kentucky . Of these, 90 are dry counties , of which 36 have restrictions. For example, restaurants are allowed to serve alcohol with meals as long as the price of the alcoholic beverages consumed remains below 70% of the price of the food consumed. In some counties, wineries with a so-called small farm winery license are allowed to set up small outlets, some of which are also allowed to sell beer.

The transport of alcoholic beverages is also not uniformly regulated. For example, in some counties alcohol may be transported commercially through the county, in others only in locked containers or not at all.

The whiskey brand Jack Daniel’s is produced in the city of Lynchburg , Tennessee , but the city itself is a dry town . At the company's headquarters, where the tourist tours take place, whiskey may be sold on the basis of a special permission granted by the Senate.

There are other dry counties in Arkansas , Florida , Kansas , Mississippi , South Dakota and Virginia .
