Dryophilocoris flavoquadrimaculatus is a species of bug from the family of soft bugs (Miridae).

features

The bugs are 6.0 to 6.6 millimeters long. They have a black base color and are patterned yellow and are easy to identify. They can still be confused with the much rarer species of the genus Globiceps , which, however, have a less pronounced yellow pattern on the front of the corium of the Hemielytren . The pronotum and the hemielytres of Dryophilocoris flavoquadrimaculatus are provided with long, fine, upright hairs and the rear part of the pronotum is strongly curved upwards. The adult bugs are always fully winged (macropter).

Occurrence and habitat

The species is common in Europe including the Mediterranean and North Africa. To the east, the distribution area extends into the European part of Russia and the Ukraine . It is widespread and common in Germany and Austria.

In particular, sunny areas are populated, such as forest edges or isolated trees.

Way of life

The bugs live on oaks ( Quercus ) and feed on zoophytophag. On the one hand, they suckle on the reproductive organs and buds of the host plants, while older nymphs and adults suckle on aphids and bark lice as well as on small butterfly caterpillars, insect eggs or the nymphs of other soft bugs, for example from the genus Psallus . The adults, which are fairly active in flight, can also often be found on other woody plants and in the herbaceous layer. They appear from the beginning of May and die in the course of June. Females can only be found sporadically in July or August.

Taxonomy and systematics

The species was first described by Carl De Geer as Cimex flavoquadrimaculatus . It is (under the synonym Cyllecoris flavonotatus Boheman , 1852) type species of the genus Dryophilocoris Reuter . The genus includes 13 species, with the main distribution in East Asia. There are only two species in Central Europe, with Dryophilocoris luteus absent in Germany.
