Jazan ( Arabic جازان, DMG Ǧāzān ) is a city in Saudi Arabia . It is located in the southwest of the Arabian Peninsula , directly on the Red Sea . Jazan is the provincial capital of the province of Jazan and has around 105,193 inhabitants (as of 2012).
As is typical for Saudi Arabia, the city is almost exclusively inhabited by Sunnis . The city has an important port, which is used, among other things, to handle the agricultural products of the region.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the place was important for pearl fishing , but at the beginning of the First World War, trade shifted to al-Hudaida . Today there are ambitious industrial and tourist development projects in the region, in particular the Jazan Economic City project .
