Jazan ( Arabic جازان, DMG Ǧāzān ) is a province in Saudi Arabia . It is located in the extreme southwest of the country and borders on Yemen in the south . 1,359,790 people live in Jazan on an area of 11,671 km² (as of 2010). This makes the second smallest province after Baha also by far the most densely populated province.
The capital of the province, Jazan , has about 130,000 inhabitants and is located directly on the Red Sea . The old town was on a cone of salt until the 1970s. The unstable subsoil forced a partial relocation of the city from the Sabcha area to the east.
There are also over 100 islands along the 300 km long Red Sea coast, which also belong to the province. The largest group of islands are the Farasan Islands .
Geographically, the province of Jazan can be divided into the following regions:
- The as-Sarawat mountains inland.
- The Alhazoun region consists mainly of forest and pasture areas.
- The rest of the province is mainly used for growing coffee beans and fruit growing e.g. B. Bananas used by irrigation.
- In the Tihama , the cultivation of millet and vegetables is only successful if the rainfall in the mountains allows sufficient transfer to the plains.
Except for the mountain regions, the climate in Jazan is characterized by great heat and little rainfall . Temperatures are over 30 ° C almost all year round and peak values of over 40 ° C in July. The air humidity tends to be 100% throughout the year. In the course of a year it rarely rains more than 75 mm (see Berlin: 581 mm).
