Duília de Mello

Duília de Mello (born November 27, 1963 in Jundiaí , São Paulo (state) , Brazil ) is a Brazilian astronomer , astrophysicist and university teacher. Her research area is extragalactic astrophysics .

life and work

De Mello studied astronomy at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro , where she graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1986 . In 1988 she received a Masters in Radio Astronomy from the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais in Brazil and in 1993 a Masters of Sciences in Physics and Astronomy from the University of Alabama . She then did her PhD in astronomy at the Universidade de São Paulo in 1995 and was a postdoc at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in Chile until 1996 . Until 1997 she did research at the National Observatory in Brazil and then until 1999 at the Space Telescope Science Institute in the USA. From 2000 to 2003 she was an assistant professor at Chalmers University of Technology at the Onsala Space Observatory in Sweden . Since 2002 she is a visiting scholar at the Institute of Physics and Astronomy at the Johns Hopkins University and since 2003 an associate researcher at the Goddard Space Flight Center of NASA . In 2008 she became a professor at the Catholic University of America . She has published more than 100 articles and written two books. She is married to the Swedish astronomer Tommy Wiklind.

  • 1997: Discovery of the supernova SN 1997D on January 14, 1997 in Chile
  • involved in the discovery of "blue blobs", which are known because they gave rise to stars outside of galaxies
  • 2013: involved in the discovery of the second largest known spiral galaxy in the universe, the Condor galaxy NGC 6872

  • 2019: Honored by Women of CUA for Outstanding Leadership in the Community of the Catholic University of America
