NGC 6872 The Condor is a bar-spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBb / P in the constellation Peacock in the southern sky . It is estimated to be 199 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 366,000 light years (other measurements speak of 300 million light years and over 500,000 light years). This makes it the second largest spiral galaxy discovered to date ( NGC 262 : 1.3 million, Milky Way: 100,000 - 120,000 ly. ). The system interacts with the small galaxy IC 4970 , which can be seen above NGC 6872.

The galaxies NGC 6876 , IC 4967 , IC 4971 , IC 4972 are in the same area of the sky .

The object was discovered on June 27, 1835 by the British astronomer John Herschel .
