Dušan T. Bataković ( Serbian - Cyrillic Душан Т. Батаковић ; born April 23, 1957 in Belgrade ; † June 27, 2017 ) was a Serbian historian and diplomat . He was President of the Institute for Balkan Studies of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts and President of the Serbian Committee of the International Society for Southeast European Studies .

Life

Bataković's proposal for the cantonization of Kosovo from December 1998

Bataković graduated from the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Belgrade in 1982 . His specialties were the history of Serbia and the Balkans in the 19th and 20th centuries. In addition to numerous publications on the special role of Kosovo and Serbian-Albanian relations, Bataković has also produced historical TV documentaries.

As President of the Council for Democratic Change, Dušan T. Bataković stood against Slobodan Milošević in the late 1990s . During this time, in 1998, he developed plans for cantonization instead of partitioning Kosovo. The plan was drawn up for the Belgrade Institute for Geopolitical Studies and presented to EU Special Envoy Wolfgang Petritsch on December 16, 1998 , but was rejected by the Albanian side and the international community.

From 2001 to 2005 Bataković was ambassador of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in Greece, in 2005 he became an advisor to the Serbian President Boris Tadić and his envoy at the Vienna Troika talks on Kosovo. From 2007 to 2009 he was Serbia's ambassador to Canada, from 2009 to 2012 ambassador to France.
