Pierre du Mage
Pierre du Mage (born November 1674 in Beauvais , baptized November 23 , 1674 , † October 2, 1751 in Laon ) was a French organist and composer .
Life
Du Mage most likely received his first music lessons from his father, who was the organist at Beauvais Cathedral . At the age of 20 du Mage went to Paris to study with Louis Marchand . There he met Nicolas Lebègue , who recommended him in 1703 for the position of organist at the collegiate church of Saint-Quentin . In 1710 du Mage was appointed titular organist at Laon Cathedral, but tensions with his superiors in the church chapter led to his quitting on March 30, 1719 at the age of 45 and becoming an administrative officer . Until his death 32 years later, he no longer practiced professional music.
plant
The only surviving collection of works by du Mage is his Premier livre d'orgue , published in 1708. It is dedicated to the Church Chapter of Saint-Quentin and contains a single Suite du ton premier , the eight pieces in the traditional French forms themselves - Plein jeu , fugue , trio , waist Tierce en , Basse de Trompette , Récit , Duo and Grand jeu - composed. As he himself notes in the short foreword to the collection, these pieces are based on the style of his former teacher Marchand.
He dedicated his second Livre d'orgue in 1712 to the chapter of Laon Cathedral and is considered lost.
