Duane Michals

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Duane Stephen Michals (born February 18, 1932 in McKeesport , Pennsylvania ) is an American photographer . Largely self-taught, his work is known for its innovative strength and artistry. Michals often works with photo sequences and the inclusion of text to illustrate emotion and outlook on life, which translates into a unique result.

Michals grew up in McKeesport, Pennsylvania. In 1953 he made a "Bachelor of Arts" from the University of Denver . After his military service, he began studying at the Parsons School of Design in 1956 with the intention of becoming a graphic designer, but did not graduate. While on vacation in the Soviet Union in 1958, he discovered his interest in photography. The photographs he took during this trip resulted in his first exhibition in 1963 at the U Gallery in New York City .

Michals worked as a freelancer for several years, including for Esquire and Mademoiselle. He was shooting for Vogue while filming The Great Gatsby in 1974 . Since he did not have a photo studio, he made portraits of people around them, which was in contrast to the work of other photographers of the time, such as Richard Avedon or Irving Penn .

In 1968 Michals was commissioned by the Mexican government to photograph the 1968 Summer Olympics . In 1970 his works were shown for the first time in a solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. The portraits he made between 1958 and 1988 formed the basis for his book "Album".

In 1976 Michals received a National Endowment for the Arts scholarship . Michals also designed the cover for the album Synchronicity by The Police in 1983 and Richard Barone's album "Wolken über Eden" in 1993. The German Society for Photography DGPh awarded Duane Michals the culture prize in 2017 in Cologne .
