Duarte Lobo

Duarte Lobo , Latinized Eduardus Lupus (* around 1565 , † September 24, 1646 in Lisbon ) was a Portuguese composer of the Renaissance . He was considered the most famous composer in his country in his time; his work belongs to the so-called "golden era" of Portuguese polyphony .

Life

Lobo was a student of Manuel Mendes in Évora , where he probably had his first job as Kapellmeister at the cathedral there. In 1591 Lobo became conductor of the Catedral Sé Patriarcal in Lisbon . He signed his works with the Latinized form of his name.

Six volumes of sacred music by him have survived, including masses , antiphons , responsories and motets .

Although his lifetime actually extends into the Baroque era, Lobos' style of music remained rather conservative due to Portugal's geographical peripheral location in Europe.
