Manuel Mendes (composer)
Father Manuel Mendes (* around 1547 in Lisbon ; † September 24, 1605 in Évora ) was a Portuguese composer of the Renaissance. He is an important representative of the Portuguese polyphony .
life and work
Mendes initially worked as the cathedral music director in Portalegre . In 1575 he went to Évora. In the same year he became a priest. In 1578 he became master of the choirboys at the cathedral in Évora. In 1585 he was " bacharel " (Bachelor) of the cathedral. In Évora, Mendes became famous for the purity of style in his compositions. He was also valued as an important music teacher. Mendes' students included Filipe de Magalhães and Duarte Lobo .
Of Mendes' handwritten works, only two masses, a Requiem, an Alleluia and an Asperges have survived.
