Dubh Artach , also obsolete Dhuheartach or Dhu Heartach , is a small Scottish rock island. It is part of the Inner Hebrides archipelago and administratively belongs to the Unitary Authority Argyll and Bute . Dubh Heartach is about 16 miles southwest of the southwest tip of Mull and west of the west coast of Colonsay . The northwest of Islay is 32 km southeast and the southern tip of Tirees 37 km northwest. The island is surrounded by several smaller rock islands, some of which only appear at low tide. It measures around 70 m × 40 m and is made of basalt . The highest point is about 11 m above sea level.

The origin of the name has not been finally clarified. In old records there is the spelling "A'Dubh-Iar-stac" ( The black rock of the west ). Today, however, there is a tendency to derive the name from “An uibh-hirteach”. Similar to Hirta , the main island of St. Kilda , it contains the Gaelic word "Irt" for "death". Dubh Artach could thus be translated as "The black fatal one".

Dubh Artach lighthouse

Due to the numerous ship accidents in the later area of the Dhub Artach Lighthouse, the need to close the lighthouse chain in this area was expressed. After a total of 24 ships were lost in the sea region in question during a storm from December 30th to 31st, 1865, it was decided to build a lighthouse. The engineers were the famous lighthouse builders Thomas Stevenson and David Stevenson , who had already gained experience with lighthouse construction on small rock islands when building the Skerryvore lighthouse. After five years of construction under adverse conditions, the lighthouse on the small rock island was finally completed in 1872. The cost of construction was around £ 84,000. The Dubh Artach lighthouse has been automated since 1971 and was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest category A in the same year.
