Dubler Mohrenköpfe
Dubler Mohrenkopf is a confectionery product from the Swiss confectionery company Robert Dubler AG in Waltenschwil in the canton of Aargau . The Mohrenkopf is a foam pastry (“ chocolate kiss ”) that Dubler produces in two sizes. The company also gained national recognition in the discussion about the connotation of the term.
Companies
Robert Dubler AG was founded in Wohlen in 1946 by Robert Dubler's father Robert Dubler senior . In 1953 it moved to its current location in Waltenschwil. The owner is the entrepreneur Robert Dubler (* 1947), who is also a racing driver and has been with the company since 1970. The son Robert junior is the third generation to work in the company.
In 2005 the company made 60% of its sales in direct sales. In 2017, it became the target of a much-noticed petition about the use of the term “Mohrenkopf”, which was taken up as an example for “controlled renaming”.
In 2018 the company had 15 employees. The turnover in 2019 was 4 million Swiss francs, and around 10 million Moorish heads were sold.
Debate about Dubler Mohrenköpfe
Dubler still uses the term “Mohrenkopf”, which in some places has racist connotations (see Chocolate Kiss ). The company has already come under criticism several times.
In a debate in 2009, Dubler vouched that he would keep the controversial name “Dubler Mohrenköpf” as a brand forever.
In 2020, the company got into the discussion when the major distributor Migros , after the death of George Floyd in the USA, removed the "Dubler Mohrenköpf" from its range. The discussion had already started in 2017. At that time, Migros was still unimpressed and even expanded the range of Dubler Mohrenköpfe.
At Migros, the product was in the range of two branches in the Zurich area, which accounted for 2% to 3% of Dubler's sales. After Migros, Migrolino also removed the Dubler Mohrenköpfe from its range. The Swiss retail organizations Spar and Volg announced that they would also think about it. In June 2020, sales increased sharply due to the discussion about the Migros decision. In July 2020, demand normalized again. The debate became political after the Swiss People's Party had asked the Zurich government council to inquire about the business relationships the canton had with Migros. The SVP sensed “discrimination against producers”. Companies in the region started a solidarity campaign for the manufacturer and distributed the product free of charge.
