The Dulzaina ( Spanish [ dulˈθajna ]) or Dolçaina ( Valencian - Catalan [ doɫˈsajna ]) is a traditional Spanish woodwind instrument from the oboe family . Its origins can be traced back to Mesopotamia as far back as the 3rd millennium BC . It was brought to Spain by the Arabs when they conquered Andalusia . Since then she has helped shape Spanish folk music in many regions. The first Spanish mention of the Dulzaina comes from the 13th century. Among other things, she was also mentioned in Don Quixote .

In the Valencia region it is also called dolçaina or xirimita . In Catalonia it is also called dolcaina , the gralla is a special Catalan type of dulzaina. In other regions it is called gaita or pita .
