Dumitru Protase (born February 1, 1926 in Mocod ) is a Romanian Provincial Roman archaeologist and ancient historian .

Live and act

Dimitru Protase was born in 1926 in Mocod (Makendorf), a village in the Nimigea municipality in the Bistrița-Năsăud district in Transylvania . From 1938 to 1946 he attended the Gimnaziul Grăniceresc in Năsăud (Nussdorf), which he finished with top grades. After completing his studies in history and archeology at the Faculty of Literature and Philosophy of the trilingual Babeş-Bolyai University of Cluj (1946 to 1950), he became a scientist and professor at the Institute of the Romanian Academy of History and Archeology of Cluj ( Institutul de Istorie și Arheologie din Cluj al Academiei Române ). In 1963 he received his doctorate in Bucharest .

Protase specialized in the provincial Roman archeology of his home country and carried out several excavations of Roman military installations in the former Dacian provinces:

As a historian, he dealt with the role of the Dacian population in the Roman phase, as well as with the questions of continuities and discontinuities in the post-Roman epochs.
